Can I travel with my pet on my flight with Viva?

Dogs and cats are always welcome onboard. Like you, they are part of the Viva family!

We know that you are happy to travel with your best four-legged friend, so if your pet is a dog or a cat they can fly in the cabin of the plane with you. For security reasons, on our flights, transport of your pet in the hold of the plane is prohibited. He or she should always be by your side during the flight.  

What should you consider when traveling with your pet?

Size of the carrier for your pet:

The maximum weight of the carrier must be 10 kg with your pet inside and the measurements must not exceed 55cmx35cmx25cm.


How to transport your pet and locate it inside the cabin of the plane:

Your pet must go throughout the flight inside the carrier, which must be made of cloth, with closure and ventilation.
Your pet must be located under your front seat on the plane, it must always be inside the carrier during the whole flight.


Type of flight:

The transport service of your furry friend with Viva is only available for domestic flights. For international flights, only guide dogs or emotional support animals are authorized.

Important: If you plan to travel internationally with your pet to the United States, from Colombia or Peru, be aware that as of July 14, 2021, the entry of dogs -including puppies, service animals and emotional support dogs- will be temporarily suspended from countries that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) considers to be at high risk for canine rabies.

Age of your pet:

The minimum age of your pet must be eight (8) weeks. If it is younger, it cannot travel with you on the plane.


Documentation of your pet:

For your pet to travel, it must be up to date with its vaccinations and its vaccination document must be signed by a veterinarian with a professional registration number.


Presentation:

Your pet must be in optimal hygiene and health conditions to be able to travel with you.


Number of pets per flight:

A maximum of six (6) animals total can travel for each flight. As a passenger, you can only take one pet with you on the flight within your reservation.


Check-in:

Check-in for your pet is not available on the web. On the day of your flight, you must show up at the Viva service counter at the airport and there you will be given the boarding pass at no additional cost.


What you must do on the day of your trip with your pet:

You must go to the Viva travel counter, at least 90 minutes before your flight, and present the up-to-date vaccination certificate or card, signed by a veterinarian and with the indication of your professional registration number

Traveling with emotional support animals is free, both for your national and international flights.  

Only one emotional support animal per passenger is allowed. A passenger traveling with an emotional support animal may not travel with other special services, such as pets or medical assistance devices.

What should you keep in mind when traveling with emotional support animals?

Documentation

Present the supporting documents from the treating doctor that justify the reason you must travel with an assistance or emotional support animal. This document should be on official stationery of the doctor with the date and his or her signature, no older than one year from the date of travel you have planned.


Transportation

Your emotional support animal should go with you in the aircraft cabin, sitting at your feet.


Assistance Dogs

Specially trained assistance dogs that accompany disabled persons are permitted without a carrier inside the cabin, always and whenever they are under the control of their owner.

Assistance or guide animals

Traveling with your assistance or guide animal on your national or international flight has no cost or weight or size restrictions.
Your guide dog should go with you in the cabin of the plane, always be by your side and sitting at your feet. It does not require a carrier inside the cabin, as long as it is under your control.

If your trip is international, you must present the following documents:

  • Vaccination card or certificate.
  • Animal health certificate issued and signed by a veterinarian. This must include the professional registration number.
  • Inspection of the animal by the competent authority at the airport of origin of your flight.

Requisitos sanitarios ingreso y salida del país de perros y gatos

La resolución 2656 del 13 de marzo emitida por el Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) trata los requisitos sanitarios para el ingreso y salida del país de perros y gatos como animales de compañía o con destino comercial.

Los requisitos sanitarios para el ingreso del país de perros y gatos son:

Presentar original de certificado sanitario, expedido o avalado por la entidad sanitaria oficial del país de origen con sello y firma original o electrónica con fecha de expedición no mayor a diez (10) días calendario previos al ingreso de los animales a Colombia en el que se certifique:

  • Especie, raza, sexo, edad y color del pelaje.
  • Que el animal ha recibido un tratamiento antiparasitario interno y externo, dentro de los cuatro meses previos al viaje, con productos autorizados en el país de origen, indicando nombre del producto, principio activo y la fecha de administración del mismo.
  • Que no presente heridas recientes o en proceso de cicatrización.
  • Que el animal se encuentra en condiciones aptas para ser transportado.
  • Presentar original y copia de la certificación de vacunación vigente que incluya la información del nombre del producto, número de lote, fecha de administración y fecha de revacunación o vigencia de las siguientes enfermedades:
    1. Para perros: rabia, enfermedad de Carré, hepatitis canina, leptospirosis, parvovirus, coronavires, parainfluemza.
    2. Para gatos: rabia, panleucopenia felina.

Los requisitos sanitarios para la salida del país de perros y gatos son:

Presentar al ICA un certificado sanitario expedida por un Médico Veterinario, en original y copia, con firma, número de matrícula profesional, expedida por COMVEZCOL y fecha de expedición no mayor a cinco (5) días calendario previos al embarque de los animales en el cual se especifique:

  • Especie, raza, sexo, edad y color del pelaje.
  • Que la edad registrada del animal en el certificado sanitario corresponda a la edad cronológica del mismo.
  • Todas las mascotas (perros y gatos) menores de 6 meses de edad y en cantidad de tres o más animales, que vayan a ser exportados, deberán estar identificadas por medio de microchips, que puedan ser leídos por un dispositivo de lectura compatible con la tecnología HDX o FDX-B. El número del microchip será registrado en el CIS.
  • Que el animal fue sometido a un examen clínico y que al momento de realizar el mismo, el animal se encontró libre de síntomas y/o signos de enfermedades infecciosas y/o parasitarias, que no presenta heridas frescas o en proceso de cicatrización.
  • Que el animal ha recibido un tratamiento antiparasitario interno y externo, al menos 5 días antes del viaje, o de acuerdo con las exigencias del país de destino, con productos autorizados en Colombia, indicando nombre del producto, número del lote, principio activo y la fecha de administración del mismo.
  • Que el animal se encuentra en condiciones aptas para ser transportado.
  • Presentar original y copia de la certificación de vacunación vigente de acuerdo con la especie y edad del animal que cumpla con plan vacunal exigido por el país de destino, en el que especifique
  • el nombre del producto, número de lote, fecha de administración y fecha de revacunación o vigencia.

Nota: Aplica para los viajeros que vuelan con mascotas de compañía. Estos pueden ser transportados en cabina en los vuelos nacionales e internacionales de Viva Air sin costo adicional, al lado del pasajero que acompañan, ubicados a sus pies. Se debe presentar la documentación de soporte médico que justifique la razón por la que debes viajar con este animal.
